Billie Jean:Το παρασκήνιο της σύνθεσης του τραγουδιού είναι ιδιαίτερα αλλόκοτο. Γράφτηκε από τον Τζάκσον, με παραγωγό του Κουίνσι Τζόουνς (με συμπαραγωγό τον Τζάκσον), για το άλμπουμ Thriller (1982). Αρχικά το τραγούδι δεν άρεσε στον Τζόουνς, και το τραγούδι παραλίγο να μην συμπεριληφθεί στο άλμπουμ λόγω των διαφωνιών του Τζάκσον και του Τζόουνς.
Η γκάμα της φωνής του Michael Jackson περιλάμβανε από νότες βαρύτονου μέχρι falsetto (στριγκλιές) και γι’ αυτό έγραφε συχνά μελωδίες που τον βοηθούσαν να δείξει το εύρος της φωνής του.
Εντούτοις, στα κουπλέ του «Billie Jean» τα φωνητικά του τραγουδιστή κυμαίνονται από τενόρο (οξύφωνο) μέχρι χαμηλό falsetto. Στο ρεφρέν ο Jackson επιδεικνύει falsetto από τέσσερις νότες και στον τελευταίο στίχο κορυφώνει τα φωνητικά του σε μια πλήρη οκτάβα.
Ο Τζάκσον εμπνεύστηκε το τραγούδι από κάποια επαναλαμβανόμενα γράμματα μιας θαυμάστριας που ισχυριζόταν ότι ο Τζάκσον ήταν ο πατέρας ενός από τα δίδυμά της. Ο Τζάκσον αγνόησε τα γράμματα μέχρι που η κατάσταση έφτασε σε ακραίο σημείο: η κοπέλα του έστειλε ένα δέμα με μια φωτογραφία της, ένα όπλο και ένα σημείωμα που τον συμβούλευε να αυτοκτονήσει μια συγκεκριμένη στιγμή. Η κοπέλα ισχυριζόταν ότι θα έκανε το ίδιο, αφού πρώτα θα είχε σκοτώσει το μωρό της, ώστε να συναντηθούν οι τρεις τους μετά θάνατον.
